A beautiful cedar wood creation

We offer you some amazing crafted artifacts built in cedar wood with characteristic scent and often worked with lemon. This type of art appeared at the beginning of the XIXth century in Morocco, and the sultans appealed to the artisans for the manufacture of decorative objects, furniture or musical instruments...

It does consist in sticking a mosaic of precious wood on a carpentry background, where are encrusted debris of shells like mother-of-pearl, or filaments of silver metal. It is also decorated with floral ornaments or geometric figures. In the Marrakech medina, the artisanal creation with cedar wood is available in many forms: boxes, jewelry boxes, games, tables, pots…

The use of natural fibers

In Morocco, the weaving of baskets is an old artisan tradition, using natural fibers in the form of ribbon, notably the leaves of a dwarf palm of the Mediterranean perimeter, very common in Morocco as on the southern flanks of the High Atlas massif. It should be called false palm doum, the real doum palm, larger and branched, being native to tropical Africa.

Moroccan baskets are usually braided in palm around the Moroccan countryside, these palm leaves were widely used to make braided articles for domestic or agricultural use such as baskets, mats or baskets. Here you will find woven baskets in Marrakech according to the ancestral craft techniques of Morocco and colored with natural vegetable dyes.

Over time, Moroccan artisans have adopted new materials and offer a complete range of equipment for the home and garden. Beniouarain offers wicker or rattan ceilings, as well as sofas, armchairs, tables, or decorative tajine dishes and other original craftworks.

The art of marquetry

The art of marquetry appeared at the beginning of the 19th century in Morocco, and the sultans appealed to craftsmen to make decorative objects, furniture or musical instruments...

The marquetry consists in sticking a mosaic of precious wood on a carpentry background, where are encrusted debris of shells like mother-of-pearl, or filaments of silver metal. It is also decorated with floral ornaments or geometric figures.

In Essaouira, the artisanal marquetry of cedar wood is available in many forms: boxes, jewelry boxes, games, tables, pots...

The artisans, originally souiri (inhabitants of Essaouira) for the most part, excel at working this wood (which tends to burst easily), to bring out the veining of the wood and to make it smooth and shiny by a fine polishing then a Varnishing using the buffer technique.

The Moroccan salon

A privileged place of the house, a cozy nest dedicated to relaxation and well-being, the traditional Moroccan living room carries high the decorative art of Moroccan handicrafts. It highlights the nobility of this ancestral know-how that passes through time.

Never old-fashioned, anchored in the Berber tradition but also open to new trends, Moroccan craftsmanship is incomparable. It provides sensations of softness and tranquility through many styles of Moroccan salons.

Constitution of a Moroccan salon

In the minds of the Moroccans, one remains attached to the moments of rest during which one shares a tea with the mint or a couscous. If the nomadic Berbers were traditionally found around a wood fire in the middle of the desert dunes, most Moroccans find themselves around a lounge table.

Sedentary or nomadic, each one builds his or her salon on the same immutable principle. Bench seating on the walls frames a lounge table on a Moroccan rug.

Velvet cousins bring color. The living room is furnished with corner furniture, pedestal tables, wall sconces, ceramic vases and a tea set. Each corner unit has its lampshade. Berber warrior paintings often decorate the walls. A perfume of incense sharpens the senses. A faint pungent odor announces mint tea and spicy coffee. The softness of the dim lighting invites you to sit comfortably. Welcome to Marrakech.

Kilim carpets

The Hanbel carpets (Morocco) or Kilim (used in Turkey) are carpets of wool that are embroidered originating in Morocco of the region of Rabat and part of the Middle Atlas. The Hanbel rugs of Morocco are often referred to by the term Kilim or Kelim (Turkish origin), a name derived from Persian gelim. Kilim designates a carpet devoid of velvet because it is embroidered instead of knotted.

These carpets symbolize the identity of the tribes that weave them; their decoration is therefore specific to each tribe. The Kilim carpets are decorated with geometric figures, notably the triangle and the diamond, and are often less colorful but with more refined decoration.

In a Moroccan living room, these carpets can accommodate a sober decoration as a colorful decoration.
