The art of
marquetry appeared at the beginning of the 19th century in Morocco, and the
sultans appealed to craftsmen to make decorative objects, furniture or musical instruments...
The
marquetry consists in sticking a mosaic of precious wood on a carpentry
background, where are encrusted debris of shells like mother-of-pearl, or
filaments of silver metal. It is also decorated with floral ornaments or
geometric figures.
In
Essaouira, the artisanal marquetry of cedar wood is available in many forms:
boxes, jewelry boxes, games, tables, pots...
The
artisans, originally souiri (inhabitants of Essaouira) for the most part, excel
at working this wood (which tends to burst easily), to bring out the veining of
the wood and to make it smooth and shiny by a fine polishing then a Varnishing
using the buffer technique.
